BASEL THE FAIR

25 June 2015

Then came the big day, Art Basel 2015 was open.

As the collectors filtered into the arena, one by one they headed to their reserved and hidden treasures. Oh the power of the internet and being able to see works in advance. I wondered if there should be a fair at all with everyone knowing what they were purchasing ahead of time but then I realised, if there was no Art Basel there would be no famous sausage!

There were some lovely family moments to cosy up together for. Tiffany, myself, Eugenio and Patrizia Rebaudengo all striking a pose.

Then with Max and Samia Hetzler, their son Max and Roy and Tiffany.

At first sight, we immediately said yes to our reserved Yngve Holen at Stuart Shave. It is the entrance to a CT Scanner. If you have ever been in one of those things it conjures some very strange and uncomfortable thoughts that tend to fill you with both uncertainty and awe.

Danny McDonald’s sculptures at Maccarone were funny and great to view.

A big surprise was Darren Bader at Sadie Coles, such humorous and happy work with a serious message.

We also spotted this magnificent Wilhelm Sasnal

and admired Roxy Paine’s ‘Rug no 1’ at Marianne Boesky.

Sprueth Magers were showing some beautiful work by Rosemarie Trockel.

Tiffany spotted a real and live snail, hope no one reports this to RSPCA.

Then it was a little mother and daughter time with Amalia Ulman’s installation at James Fuentes.

Poor soldier was left guarding one stand the whole day, he must be exhausted.

One of the highlights of the trip for Lizzie and I was visiting the Tinguely Museum where Haroon Mirza had a genius installation. He had interacted with Tinguely to perfection.
BASEL THE FAIR
He had even overlaid his electric synchronization with a work by Bjork.

And also collaborated with Anish Kapoor to create a mesmerizing and disturbing piece in the basement.

After a rather busy few days it was then time to head home and concentrate on the next great future projects at Zabludowicz Collection.
