The New Hauser Wirth & Schimmel

25 March 2016

The opening of the new L.A. Hauser Wirth & Schimmel was such a highlight. A humungous 100,000 square foot flour mill complex in the city’s downtown Arts District.

Iwan looked like the proudest and happiest man alive standing in front of this Paul McCarthy.

Some magnificent Ruth Asawa sculptures. I first saw her works the day before at the show ‘Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933-1957’ which was a look at the entire tenure of this progressive college based in Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Begun at the time when the Bauhaus was being dismantled, it became a place where Anni and Josef Albers amongst many others fleeing Germany, came to teach and seek refuge.

There were some wonderful Mark Bradford’s including this amazing MoMA acquisition.

And this absolute star in one of the hidden exhibition spaces.
The New Hauser Wirth & Schimmel
Mark had utterly mesmerised us a few days before at his studio, relating all the wonderful stories and background to his works.

It was great to see so many female artists at the gallery. Stumbled upon an interesting Isa Genzken.
The New Hauser Wirth & Schimmel
The show, ‘Revolution in the Making’ focussed on abstract sculpture by 34 female artists. A wonderful Lynda Benglis.

There was a strong sense of materiality and tactile processes. Stacking, layering, cutting, draping, gouging. An inspiring work by Phyllida Barlow.

It was great to spend some time with Phyllida. Cannot wait to see what she produces for the next Venice Biennale.

Then, before we left for Las Vegas we caught up with the charming Henry Taylor at his studio.

And discovered the amazing Aaron Fowler at Diane Rosenstein, a fantastic young artist living in Harlem. His works were full of anxiety and soul.

Then to a city where the streets aren’t paved with gold but Claus Oldenberg instead. Lovely way to be greeted by Las Vegas.
