Talk: Simon Denny and Paul Luckraft

30 June 2016

Artist Simon Denny discusses the influences of the tech industry, media history and management theory models on his work with Emotional Supply Chains exhibition curator Paul Luckraft.

Simon Denny co-opts content from the tech industry, media history and management theory to produce visual responses to prominent organisations and individuals shaping culture today. The Personal Effects of Kim Dotcom, 2013–, centres on protagonist Kim Dotcom (born Kim Schmitz), the German-born New Zealand based founder of websites Megaupload and Megavideo. Following Dotcom’s arrest in January 2012 for facilitating content piracy, Denny came across a list of 110 seized assets, which became the basis for a touring installation. This changing framework of objects interweaves questions of digital ownership with artistic strategies of appropriation and curation.

Denny’s recent solo exhibitions include those at Serpentine Sackler Gallery, London, UK; MoMA PS1, New York, US; New Zealand Pavilion, Venice Biennale 2015, 56th International Art Exhibition, Venice, Italy, all in 2015; Portikus, Frankfurt, Germany in 2014; and Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig wien (mumok), Vienna, Austria in 2013.
