Bernd and Hilla Becher
Husband and wife team Bernd and Hilla Becher have been working together for over 40 years, obsessively documenting relics of 19th century industrial architecture in Europe and North America. Their photographs of structures such as water towers, factory halls, mine shafts and framework houses function as documents of ‘anonymous sculpture’, and together make up a fascinating historical archive. Over the years, their photographic style has remained constant, and resembles that used for scientific typologies. Simple, spare and devoid of special effects, their images of centrally positioned structures, shot face-on, draw attention to the different aesthetic features of their subjects.
