Work of the Week | Richard Ayodeji Ikhide, Old Man Ra, 2017
22 February 2021
As our Instagram followers will know, every Monday we select a #WorkOfTheWeek from previous shows or the Collection. Head over to @zabludowicz_collection to catch up.
This week's pick is Richard Ayodeji Ikhide's Old Man Ra (2017) which featured in his Invites solo exhibition at Zabludowicz Collection in 2019. Now in its 11th year, Invites offers emerging artists with no UK representation a solo exhibition and presentation event.
Ikhide's intricate ink, watercolour and graphite drawings explore the creation of a personal mythology, featuring aspects of fantastical self-portraiture alongside a reflection on the importance of the symbolic across different historical and geographic moments in human culture.
'I’m looking at different time periods and cultures and trying to bring them together to create a new language. But I want it to be open enough for people to be able to gain their own understanding of these things' - Interview with Richard Ayodeji Ikhide and Curator Paul Luckraft
Whist on a recent residency at London's new space V.O Curations, Ikhide created his first large scale drawings for his solo exhibition Future Past, view online here. His brand new publication, Yiya, features drawings from the artist’s sketchbook and is available to purchase from V.O Curations.
