Winner of Zabludowicz Collection Future Map Prize announced

This year’s Zabludowicz Collection Future Map Prize has been awarded to Chelsea College of Arts BA graduate Jason File. He was presented with the prize during the opening event for Future Map at SPACE on Friday 21 March. Jason&rsqrsquo;s work, which combines themes of identity, performance and social affairs, was selected by a judging panel compromised of Anita Zabludowicz, artist David Blandy and art writer and journalist Skye Sherwin.

The Future Map Prize provides support for a graduating UAL student at a crucial point in their professional development. Jason will receive £3000 and is also invited to collaborate with the Zabludowicz Collection to produce a limited edition artwork.

Jason File said of his win:
“Winning was a big surprise. I thought the quality of the work was really outstanding, so to even be considered was an honour, let alone to actually win. I’m really looking forward to the future – it’s so encouraging to find people are interested in your work, whether it’s collectors or others, it’s just so gratifying to know it’s appreciated.”

Anita Zabludowicz said:
“From bothies to rabbit heads, the choice of artists is incredibly varied this year. However the depth of life experience and education of Jason File elevates his work above his fellow artists.”

David Blandy said:
“Jason File’s work blends life and performance for subversive effect, with an intriguing examination of subjectivity and our place in the contemporary political arena.”

Skye Sherwin said:
“Jason’s work is bold and disarming. It raises all sorts of questions about identity and structures – including those of the artwork itself.”

On Sunday 6 April Jason will be in-conversation with acting Director of the Zabludowicz Collection, Maitreyi Maheshwari, at a special event held at Space Studios.

Future Map is open from 20 March to 6 April 2014 at Space Studios, 129-131 Mare Street, Hackney E8.
