Off to Amsterdam and straight to the Van Gogh Museum to visit Anslem Kiefer’s exhibition, lead by Janne Siren from the Allbright Knox in Buffalo, here he is in front of the awe inspiring ‘Waldsteig’ (Forest Path), named after a romantic novel by Adalbert Stifler published in 1845
My favourite work was ‘Steigend, steigend, sinke nieder’, 2024. In this new installation photographs dangle on lead ribbons like reels of film. It was a complex work with a title taken from Faust where he makes a pact with the devil for higher knowledge. There are suspended photos of his performance where he made a Nazi salute on certain landmarks as a protest, here these images exist as the objects are between two different states
The Stedelijk Museum was also full of many emotionally packed works. At the top of the stairs is part of the work ‘Sag mir wo die Blumen sind’, 2024 which is quite a showstopper. The Stedelijk and Van Gogh Museum had collaborated for the first time in their history which was very exciting
Then we head to the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague, we find a painting by Ambrosius Bosschaert called ‘Vase of Flowers in a Window’ which contrasts with the work of Matt Collishaw
Then Johannes Vermeer’s ’Girl with a pearl Earing’ his most famous painting. He was the master of light as the exaggerated pearl (or maybe not a pearl?) glimmers in the light
Then on to the Voorlinden museum and Joep Van Caldenborogh Leads us through the show and points out ‘The Ear’ 2011
A beautiful show with Michael Borremans we love ‘JAM’
I discovered the pools of solid glass by Roni Horn
My favourite work by Ron Mueck ‘Couple Under an Umbrella’ 2013
A nice surprise to discover the ceramics by singer not the artist Nick Cave about his life as the devil
Joep questions what these are, but we know these are Gavin Turks bronze rubbish bags
The Highlight was in the engine room, a Magritte in clouds is just visible beyond the machinery which makes the air pure and clean for art
On the most beautiful day we discover Kiefer’s Dunes - they are so dreamy and historic
I was so sad to hear our good friend Richard Flood passed away - he helped so many artists including the YBA art thanks to his group exhibition “Brilliant! New art from London’ held at the Walker Art Center in 1995. We knew Richard when he was director of New Museum. His programming was awesome he never missed a beat we will sincerely miss him
