Armory Day

2 March 2011

The Armory was quite overwhelming. As far as art fairs go I found the experience quite intense. So many booths crammed into one space and the aisles compared to Frieze were much narrower. The last straw was when I nearly found myself sprawled over an Ivan Navarro sculpture - caught in the depths of its eternal pit. This whole undignified experience caught me off guard and after this I scarperred to my home comforts.

So this is Part 1 of my Armury experience (Hope I make it to part 2)

Armory Day
First stop Iwan Wirth (no Gregor anymore but still loads of humour). High above my head was Matthew Day Jacksons saving grace sign which will finance some insane drag race project he is planning...
Armory Day
I loved the skunk in the Chanel bag.
Armory Day
We liked this very clever work by Noa Giniger, it was a group of books with language conversions from Russian to Hebrew and everything in between.
Armory Day
The best booth we thought was Simon Lee it was a breath of fresh air designed by our home grown Toby Zeigler the stand was breath taking and the light was pleasantly diffused taking away all the glare of the art fair’s bright lights. I sat on one of their comfortable chairs admiring our own painting as well as others all inspired by Brueghel.
Armory Day
My friend Jameson dragged me from one end of the art fair to the other end to check out his latest acquisitions. I was very nervous about spottifying (ha ha) as he is in music world, his art work as I thought it may be absolutely rubbish but it turns out that Jameson got it right he even added to his discovery who turns out to be Mark Flores. Coincidently the charming gallerist from Cardi Black Box also represents Flavio Flavelli which was our first show at 176, the gallery is just about to move to Bruton Place in London! Bravo....
Armory Day
I spotted a wonderful outdoor Anthony Pearson sculpture at Marianne Boesky, it reminded me of an elegant drawing of the past.
Armory Day
We bumped into Beth Greenacre at Rokeby - she was wearing her knuckle dusters! Scary......

The evening was so lovely, we dined with the Lower East Side Galleries hosted by Art in America with Lisa Cooley, Simon Preston and James Fuentes amougst others.
