A special visit to Kulturstiftung Basel and “Extrasensory” – Chloe Wise’s first major institutional exhibition in Switzerland. The exhibition is curated by Samuel Leuenberger. What seemed for sale was strangest religious and spiritual memorabilia all piled together
The work is a multi-screen film exploring the phenomena of Aliens
The foyer gift shop… with strange seemingly second hand objects relating to the film, it felt like a kitsch time warp – She stars in her own film as ‘the alien’ and I spotted this Chloe-a-like-Alien Bust thrown in with Space Balls, Glow in the Dark Alien and the book ‘Oh, the Dog Died Again?
(Waiting for me in London was Christies was ‘My Dog’ ... actual title ‘Your Dog’ by Yoshitomo Nara)
But in June in Switzerland the art never stops, so we head to Basel Social Club - it was another excellent show in an awesome building - a hive of activity from gymnastics to exercise classes and mass catering. There were many performances from meditation in a bus hosted by Marina Abramović. I liked this work by Olivia Erlanger an incredible Fan called ‘Eurus114-6549211-7132225’
At Galerie Oskar Weiss the work of David Weiss (keep it in the family) ‘Morgengrauen’ (Crack of Dawn) 1974 were abstractions of Modernist Buildings in ink. This work could be a criticism on the banal concrete buildings being erected in the 70s, I know when I was engulfed by the erecting of Brutal Architecture in the 70s I was in awe
Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg’s ‘Spitze’ was an eye catcher from Poland’s Gunia Nowik Gallery
Something magical in this oil and ink work by Willman Gasper a French artist from Exo Exo Gallery
They also had some great moving image works by Lou Fauroux, ‘The Internet collapse’ - a 9 channel 3D animated rendered video
My favourite work was by Germen artist Leo Elia ‘The Scarecrows of Saskan (Crystal Coffin). A mixed media projection and animatronic sculpture with musical audio-visual score from aaaa nordhavn gallery in Copenhagen
There were intriguing works in abundance at Brigitte Mulholland there was USA artist Sean Fader ‘The Battle of the Bulge: Sandworm Rising’ 2025
