The opening of Art Basel was a lovely experience Noah and Meike welcomed us with a special breakfast
We met new collectors the Vanhaerents from Brussels
In Unlimited there were many sculptures they one more stunning than the other … Sadie Coles is deep in conversation beneath Matthew Barney’s ‘Cosmic Hunt’ a myth once an animal now a star constellation
Junko Oki’s ‘anthology’ was breath-taking - the embroidery was embedded with memories of prayer and war. Some of the cloth is of old garments left by his mother from the second world war
Another breath-taking piece was Timur Si-Qin’s ‘Mariposita’. Timur is looking at ecosystems under threat from human activity
Woody De Othello had made the intimate but infinite ‘Two sides that hold truth’ 2026. A big 12 metre cabinet with an array of figures giving on glimpses of African tradition
I like very Rochelle Goldberg’s work, ‘precious stones’ at Catriona Jeffries Gallery
Entertainment was on hand with children intrigued by Ryan Ganders talking mouse ‘I’ve felt everything I’m going to feel – The Unspeakable World’ Ryan’s animatronic mice are captivating for young people, Ryan has worked with his daughters to make the mouse speak
We are confronted by Tracey Emins ramshackle beach hut salvaged from Margate accompanied by some traumatic writings by her father
Egyptian artist Wael Shawky’s piece ‘I am Hymns of the New Temples’ was a beautiful precise presentation of sculptural investigation into ‘Greco Roman mythology’
And into the booths... This was one of my favourite works - a beautiful flower display by Gillian Wearing at Regen Projects
We loved the cupboards this year - they were like little museums in Regen Project’s we found Catherine Opie and Wolfgang Tillmans
In Thomas Dane’s there were many gems to observe - including Tom Dingle
Thomas Dane Gallery also had a wonderous new Hurvin Anderson that I am certain found a very special home
And finally for today … Greene Naftali had a wonderful work by Lubaina Himid ‘Their Elegance Will astonish You’ World Class Art as always at Art Basel
