We head early in the morning to Neu National Galerie where we are confronted by memories of Birkenau by Richter who questions the possibilities and limit of painting. Taking from the secret camera that was smuggled into the concentration camp by a Jewish Prisoner of War who was to be exterminated, it is nothing short of a miracle that this documentation survived
The photograph attributed to Alberto Errera of Auschwitz and Birkenau,1944, when the Germans were trying desperately to cover their tracks of inhumanity the camera caught them in the act
Then we passed by Yoko Ono’s row of beautiful tables set up for people to play non-competitive chess: white verses white
The highlight was the immersive performance by Fujiko Nakaya
We were enveloped in an atmospheric cloud which ate us up
Around town the Gallery exploration continued: At Esther Schipper was the Romanic work by Chinese super star painter Sun Yitian (who does not love smiling inflatables?)
I adored the work by Lena Henke at Galerie Thomas Schulte. Her obsession with the hoof transforms the gallery space
I enjoyed this superimposition of damaged glass and the female figure of the saint with the back drop of an urban view, seemed to be a discussion between architecture and social conflict
At Klemm’s Gallery it was great to discover the work of Leelee Chan and her ‘Spiral diaries’
Chan fuses material and objects into dynamic constellations using 3D printing as one of her medias. Here using broken fragments of Tang dynasty figures she brings back life activating them into a new and very contemporary form. Almost like a model for a larger work
We visited KW institute, and we saw Matt Copson wonderful ‘Age of Coming’ where a baby emerges and guides us through a theatrical dramatic installation using laser projected drawings. Great to see the whole Opera cycle together at last!
At Societe was a great curated show ‘What are you looking for’ curated by Brandy Carstens. I loved this painting by Anh Trần
Here is Evian Wenyi Zhang in front of her intricate work abstraction made referencing a hidden and mysterious image
Downstairs was the opening of Marianna Simnett ‘s show ‘Charades’. Each work was a showstopper! Here she is drawing from mythology and social rituals using video paintings and sculpture
Then there was the dinner for the inaugural Chanel Award Dinner at the Hamburger Bahnhof. We were celebrating the work of Klára Hosnedlová and her monumental installation
The details were surprisingly intimate and vulnerable at the same time. She uses flax, hemp, thread, sand metal and sound. Using material tied to the regions of Bohemia and Moravia
Artist Anh Trần again, enjoying this incredible moment
Great pic of Tif Zab and Roya Sachs decked out in their Chanel Accessories
Our host Yana Peel did us proud. Everything was beautiful. Met Gala NYC watch out!
