A quick visit to Margate with Contemporary Art Society and first stop is the Photography show at Turner Contemporary. The show is called, ‘Resistance’ and is curated by Steve McQueen with Turner Director, Clarrie Wallis. The way it is installed is incredibly refined. There were so many protests to comprehend: against poverty, racism, sexism, homophobia, climate change and discrimination in London and around the world, in the past 150 years. What we must remember is that where there is freedom of speech and expression – there must be protest. Through the years not everyone was right but many were. I loved Jill Posener's photo from 1979 ‘Farringdon Road’. I think this was my favourite work of all the incredible pieces on show
Then to see such amazing photographs by John Deakin: ‘Fifth Pan African Congress’. History repeats itself to this day
The battle of Cable Street where over 100,000 East end residents prevented Oswald Mosley from Marching through the Jewish Community. It was a different world. ‘They Shall Not Pass’
Then Lizzie and I nipped up to Quench to investigate the weird work of Josie KO and her show ‘Mekle Lippis’
Then to Carl Freedman for a sneaky preview of artist TM Davy ‘Tine Mara’, the work was Soft Kitch, Surreal and Luminous. His layering of colour is radiant and masterful
Then it was TKE studio time! There was a great group show with Tracey which we loved in the main hall. She welcomed us with enthusiasm and introduced us her new students – taking part in the TEAR, a 14 month residency / art school where Tracey gets all these painters to really get down to work
The second cohort of students are only 3 weeks in, and their first Tracey brief was to make self-portraits. IyunOla Sanyaolu had a good attempt
Anderson Asteclines was incredibly prolific and in 24 hours had created 10s of incredible drawings.
His drawings were intense and extremely interesting
Next we go to see the Studio Holders – who all had opened their spaces for us to come and say hello. I enjoyed seeing Lindsey Mendick – but shhhhhhh…. she had some very Top Secret works in production for an incredible project! Made for where Elizabeth I was courted as a young girl by Lord Dudley, there seems to be some very weird and wonderful games being played. Her process is intense and here is one of her future works being fired ready for installation
I’m sure Lindsey will not mind me showing this incredibly cute little rabbit not really giving anything away. The project will open in July
After listening to his incredible talk art podcast I got to meet speedy gonzalez Ted Rogers who had taken a break from his intense performances to create some sparky high voltage painting, destined for great things Ted!
I drop into meet Joline Kwakkenbos who had some beautiful self-portraits of themselves in historic dress, often clothes that they have made themselves, they also showed us some gorgeous drawings
TM Davy had also some lovely water colours, that were quite beautiful
The final studio visit of the day was to sculptor Dominic Watson Studio and it was a show stopper!
