Being in London has always been important to me and I caught a little bit of London life with a great talk with Jo Applin, Rosie Gibbons and Rachel Maclean – they explored the (feminist) legacy of Pop Art in front of Rosie’s magnificent back drop – it was great to hear about two different and dynamic practices and the legacy of pop art
The show was Taste and Decency at Gazelli Art House and included are some paintings by Rachel made using an AI that she trained on her work - it was a pre curser of the film up in Liverpool at FACT and in Fitzrovia with Josh Lilley. Here is a detail from her painting and I am fascinated
The film by Rachel – which exists as a full scale and hugely ambitious 9 channel promenade installation was commissioned by former ZC Director Maitreyi Maheswari with FACT in Liverpool – it is a triumph! Made in a gloopy AI Digital landscape, and conjuring the enchantment of reason and the Victorian ‘Golden Age’ I am so in awe of the narrative and messages that Rachel Maclean has to pass onto us. Ai Fairies dominate the world but they are not pretty and they diminish and belittle mankind. Watch out ladies and gentleman… what have we unleashed?
Then it is bye bye London and we make it to Athens to visit the George Economou collection which is a commendable collection full of greats such as this Lisa Brice, today Edward Lee is our knowledgeable and generous guide. Hello Summer! Looking forward to some downtime with friends and family
