Goodbye Venice, Hello Berlin.. and Finland!
21 June 2024
Gallery Weekend was very busy and full of excitement. The Eliza Douglas show at CFA titled ‘GIFT’ touched upon many personal subjects
Trish Baga’s recent show at Société Berlin titled ‘Contact’ looked at interior worlds, and explored the connection between human existence and the celestial realm
I went to a wonderful dinner hosted by Daniel Wichelhaus for Trisha Baga where we could relax and take our feet off the floor!
Collection artist Marianna Simnett is now showing in the Hamburger Bahnhof
At Galerie Buchholz was an intriguing exhibition by Wolfgang Tillmans, his 13th solo show. I adored the ‘View from Fasanenstrasse 31’
We headed to Adalbertstrasse 43 where Wolfgang had been setting up to release his new album co-produced by himself, Tim Knapp and Bruno Breitzke. He set up this space ‘Between Bridges’, committed to democracy, supporting LGBTQ+ rights and anti-racism work
The next day we discovered an interesting young artist called Angharad Williams at gallery Schiefe Zähne. Williams brilliantly captures the dreams of the city amongst the detritus of everyday life
I had fun with Markus Selg’s work ‘TWIN ZONE’ at Gallery Guido W. Baudach. The work came alive with AR and a meta space
At Tanya Leighton, Nicole Ondre created ‘Torsion’ where she has knotted and twisted clay from her mathematical knot theory to create textile patterns
A real highlight was visiting George Grosz’s show ‘A Piece of My World in a World Without Peace’. George was there in 1930s in Germany and predicted the evil that was to come. His paintings are urgent and still feel contemporary today, such as this painting ‘I am there’ from 1936
Also, this painting ‘The Menace’ from 1934
My most important visit was to Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings where we loved this painting depicting Rosie’s grandmother pre 1939
At Sprüth Magers were three wonderful shows by Tang Yukia, Tan Jing, Gala Porras-Kim, Zhang Ruyi and Mire Lee. Mire is showing in the Hyundai Turbine Hall commission. Here is a picture of her with her curators Alvin Li and Simon Wang
We dropped in to see Agnes Questionmark whose new work was very interesting and exciting
The creatures were unhuman but glistening and almost threatening
I headed from Berlin to Finland where at Espoo Museum (EMMA) was Tschabalala’s show ‘Self’, which was very strong and powerful
As was her work ‘Negligee 1’
A picture of wonderful gallerist Pilar Corrias and EMMA Director Arja Miller in front of the paintings
