Heavenly New York
21 March 2024
New York is turning into a real haven for me; such a great depth of art, and incredible shows everywhere I turn. As I walked past the French Institute, I spotted this artwork by Pascale Marthine Tayou titled ‘Look at yourself in the mirror’
There is a concern and great connection with the human being in his work
A highlight for me was to visit the home of collector/philanthropist Ellen Susman, a woman I greatly admire. We were celebrating Residency NXTHVN in New Haven with artist Hank Willis Thomas and Titus Kaphar. NXTHVN launches the careers of artists and curators; out of initiatives like these rises great artists!
We had time to visit the brilliant Judy Chicago show at the New Museum
For Judy, it is about us - ‘What if Women Ruled the World’
Judy’s work captures the lack of empathy, and the cruel reality of the world. My husband’s parents went through the Holocaust and the only family members to survive were Uncle Itchoo and Uncle Joshu. The grandparents, cousins and siblings were all annihilated in Auschwitz. Never again
Then I went to visit Harper’s Gallery where older artist Ricky Burrows’ honest show ‘Saved’ was recalling the human and the surreal. Like Judy, he is looking and aspiring to a world of co-existence
He manages to capture raw emotion and real life, experienced from his surroundings growing up in Brooklyn
I saw some great photography; Mary McCartney shone a light for us all to see
A great show at Venus Over Manhattan, where Robert Storr curated a show that was just wild called ‘Retinal Hysteria’. My favourite work was by Joyce Pensato
Rita de Alencar Pinto from Vanity Projects had time to show me her Thanksgiving nails which were works of art themselves! She projected Daata on her walls in her salons: a must see
I was mesmerised at Marc Quinns’ opening. It was full of so many remarkable human stories
Stunning work by Nyareeta Gach, born in Maiwut, Sudan
I was a guest at the Guggenheim Gala and felt most welcome. Wendy Fisher was once again at the podium to give a wonderful, inspiring speech
Here is a very happy Wendy Fisher with friends and family
Meanwhile back in London was an incredible show by Hurvin Anderson at Hastings Contemporary. It looked like so much fun but sadly I cannot be in two places at once!
