I arrived at my favourite destination, Spruth Magers, to see Thomas Scheibitz’s long-awaited exhibition. The gallery was filled with vividly coloured paintings and elusive sculptures. Titled 'Bright Shadows,' the show was a highlight, and I especially loved 'Fragment'
I particularly was intrigued by his sculpture. And on the top floor was ‘Kirche’ the Heddal Stave Church in Norway which is installed mathematically at oblique angles
It was a treat to visit COBRE artist Karel Appel ‘Variations on a theme’. It was most obvious that many younger artists such as Basquiat were influenced by Appel. I liked his early work 1946 'Woman with Bird'
We headed to TKE Studios, where we were greeted by Tracey. We enjoyed viewing the romantic, carefully crafted works of Jack Hirons. The exhibition, titled A Journey, felt like a journey through the countryside itself
The driving mirror was beguiling since for some reason I did not know that front mirrors some of them which I only just discovered were actual screens rather than mirrors, I don’t know how I missed this bit of technology. 'This Mirror' by Jack was a drawing rather than a screen or a mirror
Then I was transported behind the screens to Liza Zalieva studio with Stephen Webster
Next was Valentina Attolini showing some very highly charged black and white works
I loved the works of Iyun Ola
Her Studio was full of deep earth colours and heavily applied expressive paintings
Javed Akhtar had real potential, the bath seemed to be an obsession
Finally we get to see the studio of Russian artist Olya Avstreyh
The reward at the end of this journey was another journey, Ramsholt, Johnnie Shand Kydd’s work emerging from a long engagement with the landscape, made during daily walks on the Suffolk peninsula
