What a beautiful trip to Madrid. In the morning it is straight to the Prado, where there is a great Juan Muñoz exhibition ‘Conversation Piece III’ – sculptures that involve peoples in informal interactions, the faces are identical but the bodies are individual. The figures wear nothing but sacks which constrict their movement
Then the ‘Nature of Visual Illusion’ is a group of figures seems theatrical but the sculptures are observing one another, which confuses the viewer as there is no obvious orientation to view the work from, and no curatorial rules when installing the work – this leaves the work an enigma rather than a narrative. I remember in 2001 when my friends Frizi Northampton and James Lingwood lost their dear friend Juan Munõz suddenly in Ibiza it was very sad
The epic Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch - a true masterpiece. Had I seen this as a teenager it would definitely have affected my view of the world. Dali was very much influenced after he saw this painting and his work sometimes reflects the weird and wonderful work of Bosch
We were so elegantly hosted by Idan and Batia Ofer, it was very special surrounded by art, architecture and love
The RA pulled out all the stops hence there was also music to make our experience extra special
Then – ARCO! I could not go to Madrid without visiting this excellent fair where a few years ago I received an award - which was such an honour. I loved the work by Yael Bartana at Gallery Peter Kilchman. The words have so much resonance - so many of my family and friends from the Middle East cannot get home
At Levy Gallery the ‘Faux tableau piège’ 2010 assemblage works by Daniel Spoerri ‘2010’ were show stoppers
Then at Contemporary Fine Arts was great to see an expressive fun work by Ella Kruglyanskaya
At Zander Gallery I loved the intensive work by James White. ‘Double Glass’, 2018. It is hard to show the detailed oil and acrylic paint work in a photograph – but it is masterful!
My favourite work was at Charim Gallery the work of Eva Beresin the moment when you have a meal and you all have your photo taken and everyone is looking elsewhere
There were eyes everywhere by Rodolfo Abularach - I found them both sinister and fascinating
More eyes by Rudlofo
I loved the work by Elizabeth Jaeger which resonated. ‘Where have you been?’ 2022 at Gallerie Klemms
At Gallery Poggi a great piece of blown glass by Ittah Yoda (Kai Yoda and Virginie Ittah) called ‘Olivier’ 2024
At Almeida and Dale it was lovely to see some vintage works such as this work ‘Anjos’, 2004 by Tunga
