Then we slipped off to our beloved Finland for our summer (re)treat. When I arrived Makiko Furuichi and Lizzie were waiting for me in the pouring rain
Makiko spent a month imagining and painting a new mythology for the island. Here is some of her many beautiful water colours made during her stay
There were some beautiful works, here the wind, birds and trees come together before birthing the island
Here are Makiko and Lizzie showing us the studio - Makiko's work is going to go from Finland to be shown in FRAC Normandie next month
Candida Powell-Williams managed to squeeze in a visit to come and put the last touches on our new installation
I adore all the details, the sculptures are in an old root store or apple cellar and Candida has really drawn on this location and created her own mythology of transition and potential resting here just under the ground
Christine and Andy Hall joined us from Vermont for a lovely dinner in Hermans
Andy Hall popped his head in to check out the new installation by Candida
The next generation exploring Large Field Array by Keith Tyson
We partnered with the Serlachius Museum in Mänttä (250km hours north of Sarvisalo) who are exhibiting Keith Tyson's work the summer to bring their visitors to see Large Field Array and the other works of art we have installed here
We hosted 500 people over the open day weekend - here is Riikka showing off Matthew Darbyshire's Open Air Sculptures from 2018
It was such a pleasure to finally show people Oscar Tuazon's Peace Pipeline installed in 2022
and Jesse Wine's beautiful Bronze work Non Fiction from 2021
Before I left a new residency was starting with Transhuman artist Agnes Questionmark - her work is very exciting - also a combination of personal and universal mythologies, exploring an imagined version of herself as an alien underwater creature. The works are all going to Frankfurt Kunstverein for an exhibition on anatomy
In Finland we always close the season with a wonderful Crayfish Party. My neighbour Bianca wrapped herself up in the very strange lobster seat by French artist Renaud Jerez
Crayfish parties are so much fun, Assia kindly allowed us to use her Webster Ring as a (temporary) decoration
