Then I am back in a beautiful new paired down gallery in China Town, and my friend Peter Fleissig is lovingly pointing out to me the features of a wonderful gallery created in sympathy with the art and architecture
Every corner of this gallery is a gem and a joy to behold. The space is called 15orient, go and take a look.
Then to Lomex where we see some lovely works by Jaime Welsh ‘Veil’ as part of Ginny on Frederick at LOMEX
And new works by Rebecca Ackroyd where she is continuing her exploration of images in narrative storytelling. I love this work: ‘Live and Death’
A drop into Chapter NY where British artist Joseph Jones has some very intimate scale feline paintings. ‘White Cat with Gem Stones’
We enjoy the show curated by Ian Hartshorne at Grimm Gallery called ‘In celebration of shadows’. Great to see a Ross Chisholm's new work 'The Dig’
Also ‘Manifold’ by Louise Giovanelli
And this great Chloe Wise ‘Fourteen Precious Things’ - all the works honor mentors and artists they have been influenced by
Then Chelsea the highlight being Nicolas Party at Karma an exercise in copying and exhibition making
He created a pastel mural on Linen, to view this you enter through a low arched doorway with the monumenal ‘Dead Fish’ visible on the other side
The whole show is based on Goya’s ‘Still Life With Golden Bream’. HIs tiny oil on copper paintings are portraiture, still life and landscapes - such as this incredible work ‘Portrait with a Lawyer’
I enjoy the serendipity of New York - it is quite awesome bumping into the wonderful artist Polly Apfelbaum on our travels
Meanwhile - we wonder, why are they dumping all this earth in Gagosian Gallery!?
Then Dan Flavin in all his glory at Zwirner – always a pleasure to see these works – this one is untitled (to Mary Ann and Hal with fondest regards) 2, from 1976
Over at Hauser & Wirth is an unmissable boob fountain by Louise Bourgeois
As technology changes we experience the end of Kodak film and print processes - William Eggleston creates the show ‘The Last Dyes’. Eggleston pioneered the use of dye-transfer printing but in the early 1990s Kodak stopped using the process to print so these were the final major group of photographs ever printed with this analog method
We dropped by to celebrate 30 years of Casey Kaplan Gallery - wow, he has been a constantly great gallery - always championing and discovering new voices. Here he is in front of Hannah Levy and Simon Starling
Last Stop before I head home to UK was at Shrine Gallery where another Brit was showing: Laura Footes' exhibition ‘Anamnesis’
She depicts many paints dreamy scenes from her life, of beds and figures, each one more intriguing than the next
