Pre-Frieze 2023
17 January 2024
I went to Regent’s Park with Kai and we spotted all sorts of sculptures. Kai loved the organic sculpture by Li Li Ren titled ‘To find a way home’. The work is reminiscent of sea creatures, with organic, aquatic qualities
Kai’s favourite was by Zak Ové’s incredible work ‘The Mothership Connection’
Then, we went to see Hank Willis Thomas’ ‘All Power to All People (bronze)’, where an art guide was explaining in detail the nuances of this show stopping work. A provocative artwork combining the Afro pick and Black Power salute, both icons of Black identity and empowerment
Then it was off to the Tate to visit Guston, which was a wonderful treat. Here’s ‘Painter’s Form II’, with all the legs eaten up by a gummy toothed mouth
One of my favourite works is ‘Sleeping’. Here, Guston paints a portrait of himself curled up in bed, vulnerable and dreaming. Guston was not a good sleeper and often painted at night
I love, love, love this work ‘The Line’, descending from the sky like a bolt of lightning
We headed to our friends’ home for cocktails and nibbles and they proudly presented their Sarah Lucas room which was incredibly impressive
Meanwhile at Zabludowicz Collection we were ready to open our show during Frieze Week! Matt Copson’s work was shining bright alongside Ida Ekblad’s brilliant work, both seen here
As you enter the building you catch this bronze sculpture by Puppies Puppies (Jade Kuriki Olivio), who created this brilliant work in the collection
We were so thrilled and proud to launch the LuYang book, published by DISTANZ. We have produced 40 books to date
The Oliver Laric room was full of atmosphere. The work explores the history of animation, alongside ‘The Hunter and His Dog’ which showcases Laric’s practice of using 3D artefacts
I went Margate to visit one of my favourite artists Mark Leckey with his show ‘In the Offing’ at Turner Contemporary. He is collaborating with artists and musicians to create a transcendent world using music as a condition rather than a sound wave. It was a truly unique presentation with a magical film shown three times in different environments. This was my favourite magical moment
On our walk we bumped into Guy Oliver and another friend!
My brilliant Margate travelling companion Julia Greenway
There was a vibrant atmosphere in London. We visited Marina Abramović’s show, and for me, it was the best show I have ever seen at the Royal Academy
In 'Balkan Baroque', Marina lay for four days among bones
Tiffany walking through an arch of crystals
We also tried out sculptures which were ignited by human participation, some standing...
...and some lying down!
