About

Florian Slotawa's commission for Past—Forward hints at the complex relationship between collecting, commissioning and presenting works to the public. Personal Pattern transforms the main hall of the building in an ephemeral way. Slotawa has created a vast mural using a palette of colours sampled from objects — not artworks — belonging to art collectors. The work simultaneously occults and reveals a particular aspect of ownership: it makes public intimate details about the collectors and their family, but in an abstract register. Personal Pattern also marks a departure from Slotawa's more sculptural work: while the artist has frequently created monumental sculptural installations, with this flat wall painting, he has created a work whose materiality is evanescent and discreet.
