About

Ataman is a Turkish contemporary artist living between Istanbul and London. He is renowned for innovative work that blurs the line between documentary and fiction. His primary medium is moving image installation; his subject: the construction of identity, and how self-concepts bear the traces of political, religious and societal conditions.

As a young man he was involved in filming the events of the 1980 Turkish coup d'état, which led to his imprisonment and torture. A year later, after his release he left Turkey and moved to California, remaining there for 15 years. He graduated in 1985 with a BA in Film from the University of California and completed his MFA in 1988. Ataman's work has been exhibited internationally, earning critical acclaim for its depth and originality.

The 4 Seasons of Veronica Read (2001) is a 4-channel video installation, each screen devoted to a season in the life of Veronica Read, a middle aged British woman who lives with 900 Hippeastrum bulbs in her home. We watch as she carefully attends to their needs, not just waiting for them to produce their annual flower, but pollinating, resting and uhnnb h  to make sure they live their best lives. Viewers are engrossed by her simple monastic life in service to this flamboyant organism.
