About

Empire, Rothschild's largest outdoor work to date, is a monumental arch-like sculpture made of thin tubular steel and painted in stripes of black, red and green. It was originally commissioned by New York's Public Art Fund for a public plaza at the edge of Central Park, which marked the point of transition between the city and the park. Rothschild's inspiration came from the exposed winter canopy of the mature trees which surround the park's outer boundary and the way members of the public zigzag through the open area, as well as the history and legacy of civic sculpture.
