Makiko Furuichi at FRAC Normandie
20 November 2025
We are thrilled to highlight Makiko Furuichi’s exhibition ‘Marcher sur la tête’ translated to ‘Walking on One’s Head' at FRAC Normandie. Known for colour that spills beyond the canvas and hybrid forms that drift across walls and textiles, Makiko creates a world inhabited by yokai, the mischievous spirits of Japanese folklore.
For FRAC Normandie, she builds an immersive environment at the threshold between the living and the dead, expanding the mythological universe she began on Sarvisalo during her residency. Drawing from the Finnish Kalevala mythology and the Japanese mythology Kojiki, Makiko’s own creation story of Sarvisalo island unfolds through masks, ceramic beings and large-scale drawings where birds, trees, winds and strange creatures animate a playful, uncanny cosmology.
