On the way to FIAC

27 October 2017

I abandoned London for Israel and I’m immediately in domestic heaven at our enchanting home in Neveh Zedek right on the doorstep of Jaffa, Tel Aviv

It’s great to be able to hang works from the Collection in our home and Louisa Lambri’s ‘Untitled (Menil House #24)’, 2002 gets pride of place

Everywhere I walk there is art. At Jaffa Port artist Nirit Levav-Packer decided to recycle old parts into pregnant woman for her show at Warehouse 2

My highlight of the trip was of course Louise Bourgeois’ epic show at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art which included some overwhelming classics. Bourgeois started making drawings of the spider as early as the 1940s with the two spiders representing the artist and her mother

Bourgeois’ show, ‘Twosome’, explores the theme of duality in her work. ‘The Couple’, 2003 is a monumental work featuring two figures made out of cast aluminum. It was an amazing work to see in the flesh - a whirl of human beings in a spiral dance giving off terrific positive energy

Then it was to Dvir Gallery where co-owner Shifra showed me the most wonderful installation by Simon Fujiwara of Anne Frank’s house. ‘Untitled (Extension), 2017 was a real show stopper representing a Frank Gehry building eating up Frank’s house where she hid during the war until her and her family were caught

‘Diary’, 2017 was breathtaking, 16 pages were about Anne Frank and then 192 pages for you to fill in. The book is available to buy online

Then before I headed to Paris I made a tiny pit stop in Italy where I was reenergized by the beautiful paintings in the churches. The experience was mind blowing and full of wonders. Even in Assisi there were relicts of the past that seemed so contemporary

Finally I arrived in Paris and at breakfast immediately read Time Out’s wonderful review of our Haroon Mirza annual commission. We were all quite proud of ourselves to see such a delightful article!
