A vocal appreciator of the legacy and profound nature of her medium, Anj Smith has been producing intricately rich paintings for over twenty years that represent an embrace of complexity in defiance of simplicity and easy categorisation. Luxurious in detail, Smith’s paintings represent her own personal reinterpretation of traditional technique and carry an almost surreal fascination owing to the fact that they are reflective of the current state of natural deterioration in the real world. The ways in which Smith’s paintings present these key themes can be seen through their dystopic landscapes – Evolution in Poetic Language (2010); Ex-Plexus (2004) - and eccentric portraits – Awake From Yesterday (2006); The Combatant (2010) – which create their own visual and emotional language.
