About

When We Build, Let Us Think That We Build Forever includes works by emerging and established artists and dynamically engages the viewer in the depth and variety of this contemporary art collection. The exhibition features works from international artists such as Yoshitomo Nara, Ed Templeton, Tracey Emin, Jim Lambie, Banks Violette and Gilbert and George. Works by emerging artists such as Graham Dolphin and Boo Ritson also appear.

The opening of When We Build, Let Us Think That We Build Forever, coincides with the opening of the Zabludowicz Collection's new exhibition space at 176 Prince of Wales Road, London. The opening of this exhibition and her gallery space gives a unique insight into the diverse and creative spectrum New work by London based artist Mustafa Hulusi has been commissioned to create a dynamic visual framework for the exhibition. Hulusi is well known for his distinctively designed geometric posters using outdoor advertising spaces in the city. These have created viral campaigns for his work. Here, the posters, some of which can be seen in Newcastle/Gateshead during the course of the exhibition are brought in from the city streets transforming the entire gallery space and visibly forcing new readings of the artworks from the collection.

A vibrant, diverse selection of works has been chosen to create this exhibition. This ranges from the sheer exuberance of Michael Landy's installation of a costermonger flower stall loaded with fresh flowers, to the monochrome, dystopian vision of American artist Banks Violette, whose work has rarely been seen in the UK. Altogether, the exhibition is an overwhelming viewing experience. Although the individual works are bold and strong, they must also compete with the constraints of the all pervasive geometric outlines that now frame the gallery.

“I started collecting in about 1994. I believe it is very important to share, and art brings me such joy I want to share with other people! Really it's all about new things, new discoveries, moving forward, freshness - and I've kept on that track from day one". Anita Zabludowicz

The exhibition is accompanied by a limited edition artist's book by and poster Mustafa Hulusi published to coincide with When We Build Let Us Think That We Build Forever, works from the Zabludowicz Collection at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. Including an interview with Anita Zabludowicz and Jerome Sans, texts by JJ Charlesworth and Jonathan Miles, and 34 pull out postcards designed by Mustafa Hulusi. PDF available for download here.
